A Clash of Cultures – How the Misunderstandings Between Cherokee and European Cultures
Led to Deadly Consequences in the American Revolution

Our guest speaker for our meeting on Tuesday, October 27 is Durant Ashmore. Mr. Ashmore has lived in the upstate of South Carolina for 40 years. His family is Seventh Generation Greenville County since 1787. He has ancestors who has fought on both sides of the Revolutionary War and the research into his family’s past has sparked his interest in the time of the Revolutionary War and the history that has happened in Backcountry of South Carolina.

Durant, who is a botanist by trade, gives lectures on the history the Revolutionary War as well as hosting very informative field trips to various locations where important historical events have taken place, such at the Kings Mountain and Cowpens Battlegrounds as a Historical Consultant and Battlefield Preservationist.

A lifelong resident of Greenville County, Durant is a graduate of Greenville High, Furman University, and has a master’s degree in landscape architecture and a graduate minor in historic preservation from the University of Georgia. Durant specializes in the Revolutionary War history of the Ninety-Six District and gives frequent lectures to museums, libraries, and civic groups throughout the Upstate. He conducts Battlefield Walks open to the public regularly to numerous backcountry battlefields – either well-known or little-known – allowing the public to walk in the footsteps where so many heroes fought. Durant is the caretaker and preservationist at six upstate battlefields, including Ft. Lindley, Hammond’s Old Store, and Hayes Station in Laurens County.

As a polished speaker with a pleasant demeanor, Durant is excited to be participating in developing, understanding, interpreting and sharing the rich Revolutionary War history of Upcountry South Carolina and the Travelers Rest region with members and friends of the Travelers Rest Historical Society.
